Struzzi Lauds the Extension of Key-Con Coal-fired Electric Plants Authorization

April 22, 2026

INDIANA –State Representative Jim Struzzi issued the following statement regarding President Trump’s announcement that the Key-Con coal-fired electric plants will remain open:

This is a HUGE deal for Indiana County and Pennsylvania. Affordability starts with cheap, abundant, and reliable energy. Losing the Key-Con coal-fired electric plants would have removed all of those elements from Pennsylvania’s electric grid. This is why I have supported the extension of the Key-Con plants by offering formal comments to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, advocating for these plants as a legislative leader in the State Capitol, and championing the elimination of the RGGI carbon tax - which would have meant the end of these electric generation plants - as part of the current state budget. It is also important to acknowledge the major strides and investments the Key-Con plants are making toward reducing their emissions and demonstrating how clean coal can be an energy leader. Thank you to President Trump and Senator McCormick for preserving these economic engines of Western Pennsylvania, and thank you to Governor Shapiro for understanding that coal is not just part of Pennsylvania’s past; it is also essential to our future.
